When a Garment Is Unsuitable for Alteration

1 min read

Most clothing can be altered, but some pieces simply can’t be adjusted safely or to a quality standard. Orders that fall into any category below will be declined or cancelled.

IssueWhy We Can’t Alter It
No seam allowance (edges trimmed to 0 cm)Nothing to let out; fabric may fray if re-stitched.
Extreme size change requested (> 2 sizes up or down)Pattern lines distort; fit and balance can’t be preserved.
Glue-fused hems or bonded seamsHeat destroys glue; stitching leaves visible marks.
Heavy beadwork / sequins along seamRemoving embellishment adds hours and risks damage; tailor may suggest a full rebuild instead.
Severely sun-rotted or brittle fabricNeedle holes enlarge; fabric can tear during sewing.
Water or smoke damageStains and odours set; pressing may worsen marks.
Synthetic PU leather delaminatingMaterial flakes when folded, making hems or seams impossible.
